Midwestern Ontario Will See 14 New Hospice Beds

The Southwest Local Health Integration Network confirms the Ministry of Health and Long Term care is supporting the establishment of an additional 14 hospice beds in Midwestern Ontario by 2018-2019.

For Grey Bruce, two additional beds will be operational at Chapman House in Owen Sound by next March for a total of eight beds.

Funding for four satellite beds will be available, with Kincardine, Hanover, and Brockton expressing interest.

Funding will be available for ten beds in Huron Perth, but no decision has been made as to where those beds will be placed.

A study funded by the city of  Stratford, Huron County and a private donor will look at the best way to meet the needs of the region.

On November 23, the Huron Perth Hospice Sub committee will present the report to the local collaborative and make recommendations.

The LHIN says a decentralized or satellite hospice model is preferred in the region.

The LHIN is working with local committees to engage residents about the best models to meet the needs of local communities.
