Petition Launched To Support Bruce Power Refurbishment

A number of professional and labour groups are working to support Bruce Power as the province reviews the Long-Term Energy Plan.

Last year the Independent Electricity System Operator worked with the province to have Bruce Power replace major components on Units 3-8 starting in 2020 to keep the facility in operation until 2064.

Power Workers' Union representative Larry Alderdice says its important the province maintains Bruce Power's role--supplying about a third of the province's power. He adds the facility injects billion's into the province's economy while sustaining about 18,000 direct and indirect jobs annually.

The plan is reviewed every three years, and people can support Bruce Power's role by signing the petition at supportbrucepower.com.

Bruce Power Pensioners Association President Doug Mullaly says they need to ensure the Ministry of Energy understands how vitally important the eight unit Bruce Power site is to the region, and the province as a whole.

The Grey Bruce Labour Council President Kevin Smith says they are supporting Bruce Power because the company has a never-ending focus on employee safety.

Residents can also make submissions through the ministry's website: www.ontario.ca/energytalks.

“Clean nuclear power provides 60 per cent of Ontario’s electricity every year, while continuing to be the second-lowest cost source in the province’s supply mix," James Scongack, Bruce Power’s vice president, corporate affairs. "We believe clean nuclear power is essential to keep electricity costs down for families, while helping boost Ontario’s economy through investment and job creation.”
