Huron Bruce MPP Calls Provincial Approach To Electricity Crisis Piece-Meal

The PC critic for the environment calls the Ontario Energy Board's decision not to increase electricity rates for the first time in eight years, a bandaid solution to the electricity crisis.

Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says the move is not a solution, and adds the government's piece-meal approach to the issue is shameful.

She says if they were serious about making a real difference, they would come up with a long term solution to address what has already caused the rates to skyrocket. She points to research from the Auditor General showing the province has over charged Ontarians $37 billion over 8 years for energy we didn't need.

Thompson adds the province railroaded communities with their expensive green energy plan, while leaving taxpayers on the hook for billions of dollars in cancelled gas plants.

And she says the province spent most of the $11-millionbudget for the Ontario Energy Support Program for low income customers, on consultants and advertising.

"The Liberals think the flashbulbs from their photo-ops will dazzle Ontarians into believing that they care before the next by-election," she says. "Well the truth is, Ontarians aren't fooled. They are still having to choose between heating and eating, and still struggling to keep the lights on at home."
