Huron County Newspapers In Digital Domain

With the digitization program now running at the Huron County Library, Special Project Co-ordinator Sinead Cox says they'll be adding newspapers on a regular basis.

Cox says the The Blyth Standard, The Wingham Times, The Wingham Advance and The Goderich Signal went online last week and the Exeter Times and Exeter Advance will be added shortly.

Cox says having the old newspapers available online is a huge benefit for anyone doing research because in the past anyone looking for something in. For instance, the Wingham and Exeter newspapers would have to drive to the Wingham branch and then to the Exeter branch and deal with a very large and cumbersome micro film reader.

They can now look at newspapers in both branches from the comfort of their home and do a key word search without even knowing the date of the event they're looking for or all of the names.

Cox has created a list of search tips to help researchers narrow their results, and will lead workshops in the upcoming weeks to introduce local researchers and genealogists to the online interface and help them get the most out of the repository’s search functions.

The first scheduled workshop on how to use the digitized collections will be at 7pm, November 3, at the Huron County Museum.
