Huron Bruce MPP Wants Further Action To Reduce Hydro Rates

The PC Critic of Environment and Cap and Trade says the government needs to go further to address skyrocketing energy rates.

Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says hydro costs are draining the wallets of hardworking residents and driving business out of the province.

She calls today's announcement to stop signing green energy contracts a desperate ploy to repair the Premiers unpopularity.

"Ontarians have been looking for help from this government for a long time and it's a shame that skyrocketing energy rates are only just now becoming an issue for the Premier and her government because they lost the Scarborough by-election," said Thompson. "My office has been inundated with signed petitions by people calling on the government to do something meaningful to reduce hydro rates," she added.

In the past month, Thompson's office has received more than 6,000 signatures on petitions to reduce hydro rates. In fact, it was so popular it crashed her website and she had to increase bandwidth.

"The people of Ontario want tangible action. Today's announcement of halting procurement on projects that have not yet happened does not save the people of Ontario any money today. In fact, once planned increases take effect this fall, followed shortly by cap-and-trade, electricity will continue to be unaffordable. The time for empty gestures is over!"
