County Considers Expanding Basic Skills Training

A presentation by Ontario Works staff to Huron County council about a new training program generated some discussion about the potential for expanding the program.

The training program involved basic life skills that are not taught in the classroom but are skills that most people are expected to acquire at some point.

Councillor Bernie MacLellan used the example of teaching people how to read a tape measure, suggesting it's something that everyone should be able to do but a surprising number of people can't.

MacLellan wondered about the possibility of the county undertaking a similar program to help people who lack some of those skills but need to find a job.

Staff has been asked to look into the possibility of a training program and bring a report back to council.
