Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson says the province failed to address health complaints with some minor changes to wind turbine noise testing rules.
Thompson says the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change recently introduced proposed changes but did not include crucial investigation and testing measures.
Thompson says noise testing is not being done under similar weather conditions at the location identified by the complaint.
She adds most complaints tend to be filed between December and February, when no testing is done at all. She adds the ministry does not test for low frequency noise.
Thompson adds wind companies are allowed to conduct their own review of compliance issues, with no timeline, or oversight by the province.
"Rather than implement any substantial changes to the manner in which IWTs and wind proponent companies operate, Minister Murray is more concerned about signing his next costly green energy contract," says Thompson. "Meanwhile, Ontarians are being forced to live with increased electricity costs, and to register environmental and health complaints to a system that is proving not to work. This is completely unacceptable.
"The Environment Minister has a responsibility to ensure that his ministry is investigating and collecting accurate, verified data and addressing the complaints of citizens in a timely fashion, but it appears that he is more concerned about the next environmental photo-op than the well-being of Ontarians. The minister must take immediate action to implement effective investigation and testing mechanisms and address compliance problems and complaints in a timely manner."
