Smoking At All Time Low on World No Tobacco Day

If you smoke cigarettes and are looking to quit, today is as good as any to kick the nasty habit.

Today, Tuesday May 31st, 2016 is 'World No Tobacco Day' but that's not all; it's also the 10th Anniversary of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, which came into effect in 2006.

And according to one spokesperson with the Huron County Health Unit, the numbers of smokers across the region and province is on the decline.

In fact, the number of smokers is at its lowest.

"Across the province we're actually at an all time low of our smoking rates which is a great achievement in itself," says Samantha Docherty, Health Promoter for the Huron County Health Unit.

Docherty attributes this success to a number of effective 'interventions' like the banning of smoking in public spaces and the removal of smoking advertisements, especially those targeting younger people.

The Ontario Lung Association says smoking remains the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the province.
