New Committee To Consider Future Of Saugeen Shores Police Building

Saugeen Shores Police Services Board is looking for public opinion on the future of the police headquarters on Tomlinson Drive.

Cheif Dan Rivett says the 6000 square foot facility built in 2000 has always been too small for their needs.

He says they needed at 10,000 sq. foot facility then, and the lack of space creates an increasing number of deficiencies in the operation.

He cites issues like evidence storage, security, access to technology, equipment storage, and operating efficiency.

"Each of these deficiencies reduces the ability of the police service to provide adequate policing for our community" says Police Board Chair Luke Charbonneau. "We felt it was important to lay this out for the public so everyone can see the effect that insufficient space in the police building is having on our ability to provide adequate service."

The board wants to hear how residents feel about the problem and about possible solutions.

Public meetings are scheduled for July 13th at the Port Elgin Fire Hall, and August 17th at the Southampton Town Hall. Both meetings begin at 7pm.

"Our intention, at this stage, is to have a dialogue with the public about the problems and to hear from them about what steps should be taken to overcome them" Charbonneau stated.

The board is also putting together a committee to create recommendations on how to address the needs of the police service, and anyone interested in joined should go to saugeenshorespolice.com.
