Bluewater Board Considered Reducing Walking Distance For Students

The Bluewater District School Board plans to standardize the urban walking distance to school for all students in the district.

Staff propose reducing bus eligibility for secondary students from 3.2 km to 1.6 km. That would align with the current elementary student walking distance.

The board will vote on the plan at the June 21 board meeting.

The board says savings realized from the consolidation of Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute at West Hill Secondary allows for improved student services.

“We are very excited by these proposed improvements to transportation. Standardizing the urban walk distance to school to 1.6 km will ensure much better access to bus transportation, and will address one concern we heard from students during the recent accommodation review. Many former OSCVI students will be eligible to get a bus to the amalgamated school on the west side,” says Superintendent of Education Jean Stephenson.
