Grey Bruce Medical Officer Bids Farewell To Meaford Council

Members of Meaford Council praised outgoing the Grey Bruce medical officer of health this week.

Dr. Hazel Lynn paid an unexpected visit to Meaford council, Monday, as a part of her farewell tour of municipal councils in Grey and Bruce County.

Lynn retires as head of the Grey-Bruce Health Unit at the end of May after 16 years of service.

She was hired as head of the health unit in 2000, during the investigation into the Walkerton water tragedy. During the next 16 years, Dr. Lynn also headed other campaigns to improve health in the two counties.

One campaign for which she is especially proud is the campaign to encourage municipalities in Grey and Bruce counties to adopt no-smoking policies. Most of these municipalities have since adopted no smoking by-laws in their jurisdictions. Lynn is especially proud that many of those who’ve quit smoking are youths and young adults between 16 and 25 years old.

One of her latest projects is developing a program to deal with the high incidence of alcoholism in Grey and Bruce.

Council members praised Lynn’s work and wished her well in her retirement.
