MPP Delivers Petitions To Queen's Park To Save OSCVI

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker delivered letters and petitions to Queen's Park today that oppose the closure of Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute today.

2,100 citizens signed the petitions asking Education Minister Liz Sandals to listen to the residents.

Walker says closing schools, firing staff and cutting resources in the classroom is no way to run an education system.

He says the funding formula continues to be flawed despite election promises to address it.

He fears school closures will continue, which pit neighbourhood against neighbourhood, and destroy communities.

Walker hopes the minister will respond before the required 24 sessional days.

He says its galling that the government is fast tracking school closures by shortening the public consultation period to 10 weeks from 7 months.

“Sadly school closures are part of the result of years of the Liberal government overspending, mismanagement and scandals," concluded MPP Walker.

The Bluewater District School Board wants to renovate OSCVI to accommodate elementary students from several schools it plans to close.

All secondary students would attend West Hill High School in Owen Sound starting in the fall.
