Scattered Power Outages Affect Thousands In Midwestern Ontario

Numerous power outages continue to affect thousands of Hydro One customers across Midwestern Ontario.

Pockets of power outages are resulting from downed tree branches and power lines.

Hydro crews are busy trying to restore electricity in Perth, Huron, Bruce, Grey and Wellington counties.

Port Elgin, Owen Sound, Chatsworth, Markdale, Sauble Beach,  Drayton, Chesley, Stratford, St. Marys, North Perth, and surrounding areas might not get thier electricity restored until 11:30pm tonight

Hydro One customers near Durham and Mount Forest are also looking at an estimated restoration time of about 11pm.

Some high winds today could bring down more trees and branches, and lead to more power outages.

Motorists should beware of slippery roads, downed hydro lines, and fallen tree branches.

Much milder conditions are also expected on the weekend.

Owen Sound police responded to 90 calls overnight with most relating to the ice storm.

Officers and fire fighters are dealing with fallen trees and branches, downed power lines, transformer flare-ups, and alarms.

Sergeant Ted Kitto says 911 operators skillfully managed the barrage of calls, and dispatched emergency crews proficiently.

A transformer power surge in the Westmount area caused tripped out and smoking fuse panels and appliances.

Emergency workers went door to door to ensure residents' safety.

Roads remain ice covered and slippery, and police are requesting motorists stay home if they can.
