Huron OPP Investigate Internet Pop Up Scam

Huron OPP says a Goderich resident narrowly escaped an online scam this week when his computer started to freeze, and a message from a software company "popped-up."

The resident called the number provided, and gave his credit card number to buy an anti virus software program.

Then he was told the payment was not received, so he went online to transfer funds from his account. The scammers gained remote access to the online banking page, and attempted to move $2,500 from one account to another

Fortunately the victim noticed, called his bank and then police.

Police remind people that Malware or malicious software encountered while browsing online can infiltrate your computer.

Viruses, trojan horses and scare-ware are spread through emails, pop ups, instant messaging and compromised websites.

Criminals can use it to steal your personal information.
