Wellington Place Lands In Aboyne To Expand

Wellington County’s Wellington Place Lands in Aboyne are being expanded and improved, thanks in part to an $80,000 federal government grant.

Work at the home of the Wellington County Museum and National Historic Site will include the renovation and expansion of existing trails, expansion and improvement of the existing public education programmes.

The Wellington County Museum was built in 1877, ten years after Confederation.

It is designated as a National Historic Site as the oldest, surviving House of Industry and Refuge in Canada, also known as a "Poor House" or place of refuge for the poor, homeless, and destitute people in Wellington County.

It operated as a Poor House and Industrial Farm until 1947 when it became a County Home for the Aged.

In 1974 it was transformed into the Wellington County Museum and Archives.
