Durham-Area Farmer Michael Schmidt Charged With Theft

A new twist in the case of two cameras found in the ditch on the concession near the home of Durham-area farmer Michael Schmidt

Schmidt has been charged with theft.

The Durham-area dairy farmer says he's been served with two summons.  One is for theft under $5,000 and one is for interfering with the lawful operation of property.

Schmidt says the charges are related to the two surveillance cameras he found in the ditch near his home this summer.

He refused to return the cameras because police wouldn't tell him who they belonged to. It's since been learned they were put there by the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Schmidt says the cameras were taken by one of his supporters, are in the hands of a lawyer and he doesn't know who that lawyer is.

He says this is more harassment.

"I think this will be a major, major confrontation, I mean that's what they set it up for. This is now the power of the state against the power of the people," says Schmidt in a phone interview.

Michael Schmidt has been fighting authorities for 20 years over his unpasteurized milk operation.

He's been ordered to appear for fingerprinting at the West Grey police office on October 19 and is to appear in Walkerton court on October 26.
