Concerned Neighbour Helps Save Woman's Life In Port Elgin

Saugeen Shores police say the actions of a neighbor and firefighters saved the life of a woman rescued from a smoke filled apartment.

A neighbour called in a report of a smoke alarm sounding in a second floor unit of the Arlington Apartments on Goderich St. in Port Elgin. The caller worried because the car belonging to occupant of that apartment was in the parking lot

Police called the fire department, and attended the scene where they could detect the odour of smoke through the door. Police kicked in the door, and heavy smoke billowed out.

A woman was found unresponsive, half lying on a bed, and officers pulled her to safety.

They used fire extinguisher to douse a burning pan on the stove.

An officer was treated for smoke inhalation, and the 56-year-old victim was admitted to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The report came in about 10:35pm on September 30.
