Arson Charges Laid In Goderich Fires

An 18-year-old Goderich resident faces six criminal charges in connection with some recent fires in the town.

Huron County OPP including members from the Huron OPP Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS) investigated a series of deliberately set small fires.

The first was at approximately 1:30am, Friday when police and the Goderich Fire Department responded to a fire that caused minor damage to some trees and shrubs at the end of Cove Rd.

Just after 3am Saturday, police were called to Cove Rd. to investigate a complaint and found a small grass fire which officers were able to put out.

Early Sunday morning, police and Goderich Fire responded to another call at Cove Rd. when two garbage bags had been set on fire.

Later that day, just after 4pm, Huron OPP officers attended a restaurant in Goderich after a small fire was discovered by staff inside the restaurant.

The fire was extinguished by restaurant staff.

Through the course of the investigation, officers were also able to determine the male was responsible for stealing a quantity of cash from the same restaurant.

As well, officers determined the male was responsible for calling police on September 27 and making a false report to police about being stopped on Bluewater Veteran’s Highway by someone impersonating to be a police officer.

This proved to be a hoax.

As a result, the 18-year-old has been charged with four counts of Arson, Public Mischief and Theft Under $5,000.

He was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for November 9 in Goderich.
