Lieutenant Governor To Visit Grey County

Ontario's Lieutenant Governor has accepted an invitation to a special event in Grey Highlands later this month.

The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell will attend a dedication ceremony at the Old Durham Road Pioneer Cemetery to mark the 25th anniversary of the original dedication ceremony in 1990. She will be joined by several other guests, including a representative from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Old Durham Road Pioneer Cemetary Committee, in partnership with the South Grey Museum and the Municipality of Grey Highlands, was able to install a new pavilion to house the remaining headstones of an historic black Pioneer Cemetery.

The dedication is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, September 20 at the cemetery located at the corner of Grey County Rd. 14 and the Durham Rd.

The Old Durham Road Pioneer Cemetery Committee is a volunteer organization made up of local citizens. The committee formed in 1989 to reclaim the burial ground, register it as a cemetery, and put the recovered four headstones on display.

Since that time the committee has maintained the site, met tours and held an annual dedication service.
