Save VIA Campaign Continues

The Campaign Co-ordinator for the Save VIA campaign says now is the time for people to get vocal if they hope to save VIA service to communities outside the Toronto - Montreal - Ottawa triangle.

Greg Gormick maintains VIA service is very much a political operation.

It' the government of the day that writes the cheques to keep it running and that government should be setting policy about where the trains run.

Gormick points out VIA Rail isn't even a Windsor to Quebec corridor anymore.

VIA wants the Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa corridor but he points out it's supposed to be a national service serving all of the small communities that need that service far more than larger urban centres.

He adds where there is no rail service, there should at least be feeder bus service and AM-Track provides in the U-S.

Gormick says he believes the campaign as gathering momentum as more people come to understand the issues.

Last Thursday they held a day-long rally in St. Marys and they had close to 60 people there to meet the first eastbound train at eight in the morning and then around 80 people there at noon to meeting the westbound train.
