St. Marys Cyclist Charged

Perth County OPP has charged a cyclist following a weekend crash in St. Marys.

Shortly before 1:30am on Sunday, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Queen St. E and Church St. N where a bicycle had collided with a car.

Police say an investigation revealed that a cyclist and passenger were travelling north (downhill) on Church St. N and went through a red light, colliding with an eastbound cab on Queen St. E that was in the middle of the intersection.

The female passenger on the bike and the male rider were thrown onto the pavement and sustained minor injuries.  Both were taken to local hospital by Perth County EMS and were treated.

The occupant of the cab was uninjured, however the cab sustained damage.

The 32-year-old male bicyclist has been charged with failing to stop for a red light.

The OPP is reminding cyclists that their bicycle is a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act, which means that, as a bicycle rider, you have the same rights and responsibilities to obey all traffic laws as other road users, including stopping for red lights and stop signs and complying with all other signs.
