Meaford Council Appoints Wind Turbine Group Delegate

Meaford now has a delegate on the Multi-Municipal Wind Turbine Working Group. Meaford council voted last night to accept councillor Jason Calvert’s offer to serve on the MMWTG.

Council also voted to pay the $700 membership fee for joining the organization. This expense will be covered by Meaford’s budget for education and conferences.

Calvert told council that Meaford could benefit from joining the wind turbine working group.

Calvert agreed with Deputy Mayor Harley Greenfield that simply declaring one’s municipality an 'unwilling host' for wind farms has not kept the wind turbine companies away.

Greenfield told council, "The goal of the MMWTG is to persuade Queens Park to make some needed changes in the Green Energy Act. The group consists of representatives from 13 towns and villages where wind turbines now operate. They meet once a month to share information and map out possible strategies for convincing Queens Park to make necessary changes in the Green Energy Act."

These changes, he said, would give municipal councils a chance to ensure the wind turbine farms are run safely.
