St. Marys School Receives $2,000 For Outdoor Classroom

South Perth Centennial Elementary School in St. Marys has received a $2,000 grant from the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds program.

According to Avon Maitland District School Board officials, students at the school have been working on an Environmental Learning Ground for about two years.

“The whole idea is that the students in this outdoor setting can learn about how trees and shrubs and things grow and the life that moves through the grass,” Avon Maitland Communications Manager Steve Howe tells CKNX News.

Howe says students can learn much easier in an outdoor setting how trees and plants grow and what types of creatures crawl through the grass.

The grant will go toward the purchase more trees and shrubs to create a shaded area and to build what amounts to an outdoor classroom.

While the Learning Ground is designed for education, Howe adds it's also an area for play.
