Canadian Government Invests in Marsh to Stop Erosion Near Highway 21

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb presented a cheque to Marian Hindmarsh Monday to help preserve wetlands on the Hindmarsh Farm just south of Goderich on Highway 21.

The Hindmarsh Family has partnered with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority on several projects over the years and yesterday's presentation was for $50,000 through Environment Canada National Conservation Plan – National Wetland Conservation Fund.

Lobb says the wetlands will help to slow down water rushing towards the lake and slow down erosion.

"People who are familiar with the Goderich area know that there has been problems through the years with erosion and trying to preserve the bank on the west side of the highway, towards the lake," Lobb told CKNX News after the announcement.

The Hindmarsh Farm was enshrined in a protective conservation agreement with the Ontario Farmland Trust (OFT) in 2009. The property is 140-acres with a mix of workable farmland, ponds and scrub land, and hardwood bush.

The major forest block on the property contains a circular trail that has been named the John Hindmarsh Trail in honour of the owner's late husband who was an active conservationist. The trail is maintained by the Maitland Trail Association.
