Bruce Power Unit 6 Back In Service

The planned maintenance and inspection of Unit 6 at Bruce Power wrapped up this week.

The 822 megawatt CANDU unit was shut down in April and involved about $100-million of private investment.

About 700 temporary workers were employed during the project.

Chief Nuclear Officer Len Clewett says the project ensures continued safe and reliable performance..

While Unit 6 was shut down, workers removed Cobalt-60 which will be used to sterilize disposable medical supplies like syringes and surgical masks. It is also used to sterilize cosmetics, irradiate spice and food like fruit, poultry and meat.

Bruce B now has all eight units operating, providing about 36 per cent of Ontario's electricity.

“Bruce Power is committed to not only playing a role in providing a reliable source of affordable, clean electricity over the long-term, but providing the world’s largest source of Cobalt-60 from our Bruce B units,” says Clewett.
