Wingham Library Officially Named After Alice Munro

The sign had already been changed but Wingham's Library was officially named the Alice Munro Public Library at a ceremony on Saturday. Ribbon cutting coincided with a number of events going on in Huron County as part of the Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story.

"I hope this library brings as much joy to the people of Wingham as it did to me," Munro says in a statement, as she was unable to attend the ribbon cutting.

A number of community groups and the Township of North Huron had came together in the past few months to honor the 2013 Nobel Prize winner.  Local group Wingham friends of the Library got the ball rolling with the idea to rename the library, which council unanimously agreed to.

Representative Sue Steip said it's the perfect fit.

"I thought it should have been done long ago," she says. "Not everyone can say they are a Nobel Laureate."

North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent echoed those statements adding the connection between the author and the local branch is strong.

"It is near and dear to her," Vincent says of the library. "It's something the community can now see and recognize her for what she has accomplished."

Munro has wrote multiple award winning short stories with many of them based on her experiences growing up in Huron County. The Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story is running all weekend long with events in Wingham, Blyth, Clinton and Bayfield.
