Public Elementary School Teachers Start Job Action Monday

School boards across the province have received notice from the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario that elementary school teachers will start a labour action on Monday.

The Director of Education for the Avon Maitland District School Board, Ted Doherty, says he understands the strike action will be province-wide and could take many forms -- from a work-to-rule campaign to a walkout.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario has told members they will be on a work-to-rule campaign starting Monday that will include refusing to administer standardized tests or prepare report cards.

The union says the job action is in response to government demands to remove class-size language from collective agreements and to direct teachers on how to spend their class preparation time.

Meanwhile, elementary schools in the Upper Grand District School Board across Wellington County will be open as usual on Monday.

A news release from the board states that it expects elementary school teachers in the board will begin an administrative work-to-rule campaign. There will be no impact on extended day programs, other childcare programs, or transportation.

The board will provide any new information on its website at www.ugdsb.on.ca.
