Bayfield Revitalization Moves Ahead

Bluewater council has voted against burying hydro lines in the plan for revitalizing the downtown section of the village of Bayfield.

Bayfield ward councillor Bill Whetstone explains the plan to revitalize the village has been in the works for about ten years now. He says the goal is to improve accessibility and making it easier for people to visit the downtown area year round.

That would include things like new sidewalks, getting rid of the curbs, protecting the trees, create more green spaces and possibly burying the cables.

Whetstone says final plans will be drawn up and posted at the Post Office on the main street before a public meeting is held to get final input from Bayfield residents. A date for that meeting will be posted on the Bluewater web site.

The Heritage committee wants to restore the tree canopy along the main street and burying the cables would help with that. But Whetstone points out it would also add 300 to 400-thousand dollars to the cost of the project.

Council has voted against burying cables at this time but Whetstone adds it could be done at a later time if funding became available. Without that extra cost the project can now move ahead.
