A specialist with the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation says climate change is putting increasing pressure on the bluffs and gullies along the Lake Huron Shoreline.
Coastal Resources Manager Geoff Peach explains that with a higher lake level, warmer temperatures, and more intense rainfall predicted for this summer, the threat of more severe erosion increases along the shoreline.
Peach says one of the most effective preventative methods is to preserve what vegetation still exists along the shoreline and plant more wherever possible, because the vegetation will help stabilize the banks.
He also recommends minimizing the amount of water flushed through septic systems along the shoreline to reduce pressure on the slope.
And Peach adds anything that will slow the flow of water off the land and towards the shoreline -- like wetlands -- will reduce the threat of erosion.
