Owen Sound Council Considers Replacing Prayer With Silent Reflection

Owen Sound council may soon be changing the way it begins a meeting.

It's because of the Supreme Court of Canada ruling that opening a council meeting with a prayer infringes on freedom of religion.

Mayor Ian Boddy says a moment of silent reflection may be the best way to go.

A change to the way Owen Sound council opens meetings will require a council vote to ammend the procedural bylaw.

"We switched from having the Lords Prayer to inviting different religions, different churches to come in and do a prayer for us. My reading of this case so far is that we're not going to be able to do that," says Boddy.
