MVCA Officials Monitoring Spring Thaw

Weather conditions of the last week in the area mean the snowpack in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds continues to melt at a very gradual rate.

Officials with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority say the water content in the snowpack is virtually unchanged from a week ago.

Based on the latest forecast calling for approximately 5 mm of rain over the next 24 hours and cooler temperatures by Sunday and Monday, flooding beyond traditional low lying areas is not expected.

MVCA staff will be monitoring conditions carefully.

Channels have also begun to open on smaller tributaries and as surface ice begins to break-up, there is the potential for ice jams to develop in the Lower Maitland River.

Residents are reminded to stay away from all watercourses as the extremely cold water combined with slippery and unstable stream banks has created hazardous conditions near all waterways.
