Southgate Citizens Want Rules On Gravel Pits Near The Saugeen River

A Southgate citizens' group known as Engage is urging council to determine if the Beatty Saugeen River should be designated as a "significant valleyland."

If it is, the group may succeed in getting more strict controls placed on gravel pits along the river. The Beatty Saugeen is a tributary of the Saugeen River.

Engage President Doug Karrow says of the seven approved or proposed pits in a 3 sq km area near the river, "when you concentrate industrial activity in that area you’re bound to have environmental repercussions that are greater than the sum of the individual parts."

Council seemed agreeable to the request, but decided to wait until its next meeting to make a decision.
