Huron County Reluctant To Commit To High-Speed Internet Committee

It may be a while before Huron County names a representative to the Western Warden's Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology Committee.

Huron and Perth have been asked to have a representative on the SWIFT committee, but have so far been reluctant to do so.

Huron Warden Paul Gowing explains they're still waiting for some assurance that local service providers would be used in expanding broadband service in the area.

"We haven't been provided with a business plan from the SWIFT committee at this point and that's really the issue that we're mainly concerned with. They are asking for quite a contribution from Huron County and we need to see a business plan before we get involved." Gowing tells CKNX.

Gowing adds the SWIFT committee is asking for a commitment of $135,000 a year for each of the next five years, but don't expect to have a business plan completed for another six months.

Huron County council voted against including the SWIFT request in the budget and if they're convinced to get involved after seeing a business plan the money can come out of reserves.
