Water Watchers Want Owen Sound To Declare Water A Human Right

An Owen Sound group wants city council to ensure the city's water is protected now and in the future.

Members of the group, known as the Owen Sound Water Watchers Committee, appeared before the city's Operations Committee. They're asking council to declare Owen Sound a Blue Community.

There are several such designations in communities across Canada.

Committee spokesperson Liz Zetlin says they're asking the city to declare water a human right, to ensure the city's water and water treatment facilities remain in public hands and want bottled water phased out.

She says they're not condemning the city for the way the water system is currently run. It's more the future they're worried about.

"There is a vision for how we manage the accessibility, the security and the quality of water into the future and for future generations," says Zetlin.

The delegation at the Operations Committee included students from Owen Sound's Bayview Public School.

The Operations Committee is asking the water advocates to refine the wording of its request and appear at a future meeting.
