Owen Sound Group Calls for Living Wage for All

A group in the Owen Sound area wants action from city council to ensure all people are paid a living wage.

Peace and Justice Grey Bruce presented a report to council on the issue of precarious employment. The report outlines the social costs of people making wages that put them below the poverty line.

The Bruce Grey United Way estimates a living wage in the area is between 14 and 16 dollars an hour. The report asks council to implement a policy where all city staff and all employees of contractors working for the city are paid a living wage.

Peace and Justice Grey Bruce spokesperson David McLaren authored the report.

He acknowledges city employees are already paid more than living wage, "It's the recognition that a living wage is important that is important here," said McLaren.

Owen Sound city council instructed staff to study the report in more detail and report back on the impact of implementing the requested measures.

Peace and Justice Grey Bruce will be presenting its report to Grey and Bruce County Councils.
