More Windy Days Mean Blowing Blue Boxes

If you've experienced your blue recycling box being blown down the street, it's probably also happening more often as we get more windy days than we used to.

President of the Bluewater Recycling Francis Veilleux says in recent years even the much heavier wheelie bin which has been tested for winds up to 70 kilometres per hour can be blown away.

He says there are some things residents can do to minimize the risk, such as putting stacks of newspapers or even the garbage bag on top of the box. But once it's been emptied, it's vulnerable.

Veilleux also points out that on some days it's just not a good idea to put your blue box out and he suggests just keeping it until the next pick up day.

If you've lost your blue box, it can usually be replaced at your municipal office.
