MP and MPP Call for MNR to Act on Alleged Over-Fishing in Colpoys Bay

The MP and MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound are calling-out the Ministry of Natural Resources over alleged illegal commercial fishing activities near Wiarton.

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller and Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker say they want to see the MNR act on over-fishing in Colpoys Bay.

The two Conservative representatives put out a joint letter late Monday afternoon claiming the MNR have not laid charges in relation to the complaints, even though there have been numerous complaints about the commercial fishing activities.

"They are allowed to have 300-metres of net, but we know right now there is a minimum of a kilometre-and-a-half of net," Miller tells CKNX News, "And the MNR watched them one day last week, but when the boat came in to Colpoys dock, they just drove on by and didn't investigate."

The letter also claimed that some fish have been caught inadvertently and then thrown away.

The MNR has reportedly referred the complaints to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation - whose commercial fishing area covers the bay.
