Goderich Mayor Presides Over Last Meeting

Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt presided over his last council meeting last night.

Shewfelt has been involved in municipal politics for the last 29 years, 20 of them as Mayor Goderich.

Shewfelt points to the recreational facilities and assuming ownership of the harbour as two of the town's greatest achievements over that time, and the tornado as the single event that had the most impact.

He says, "I think we've done some great things for the community, and  certainly we've provided some great recreation services.  And I think the big move was when we purchased the beaches and the harbour off the federal government.  I mean that was really good fortune and everybody worked hard on that."
He adds the storm in 1995 helped the town prepare for the tornado but he believes the impact is still being felt by the town's economy.

Shewfelt still chairs the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and sits on the Walkerton Clean Water Centre Board but he'll also have a little more time for himself now and he's looking forward to that.
