Bridge Construction In Chesley On Target

The rebuilding of the Chesley Main Street Bridge remains on schedule and on budget.

Bruce County Director of Transportation and Environment Services Miguel Pelletier says construction crews have not faced any major setbacks in the first two months of rebuilding the bridge, which was damaged beyond repair by icy floodwaters in February.

"We're working on the abutments, and then they are probably going to start putting the caisson in so we can put piers in, and then after that, you're going to see the superstructure go on, probably in the fall sometime," says Pelletier. "And hopefully, the plan is to have the bridge open by the end of the year."

Bruce County council has submitted eligible costs of just shy of $2.8-million to the provincial government for disaster relief under the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program, but Pelletier says they have not heard back on how much, if anything, the province is willing to cover.

"Our corporate services have put in for some requests with the province to assist, we haven't heard back on the outcome yet," says Pelletier.

The county is currently funding the bridge replacement internally, and are planning to apply for additional funding through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.
