Arthur Tim Hortons Fire Tied To Rea And Walter Act

After the recent fire at Tim Hortons in Arthur, the MPP for Perth-Wellington is renewing his call to pass the Rea and Walter Act.

This act would require truss and lightweight construction to be identified in most commercial and industrial buildings.

Randy Pettapiece says the results "could have been catastrophic.  That roof could have come down".

The fire on July 21 started in the ceiling cavity and had been burning for some time before staff noticed smoke. Customers and staff were unaware a fire was smouldering right above their heads.

Wellington North Fire Chief David Guilbault says his department believes the roof was moments away from collapsing before they arrived on scene.

The Rea & Walter Act previously had unanimous support from all parties but died when the previous Liberal government failed to act on it.

Pettapiece says he will introduce the bill again in the fall, and expects the bill to pass with all party support.

The Rea and Walter Act is named in memory of North Perth Fire Service Members Ken Rea and Ray Walter, who died battling a fire in Listowel in 2011.
