Grey County's Irish Heritage Celebrated

Grey County's Irish heritage will be celebrated this Saturday.

People will gather in the area known as the Irish Block between Owen Sound and Meaford.

The day starts at St. Michael's cemetery with a mass and dedication of a new iron fence and cemetery upgrades, made possible by community donations.

Events are being organized by Jerrie and Mike Traynor along with a committee. The Traynor family was among the 41 families that first arrived about 170 years ago.

"It's important to remember where you came from. There's only one or two families left that are of the original 41 families and so, how do we remember, how do we reach out? so it's kind of a great reunion," says Traynor.

He adds there's been a huge amount of interest in the celebrations.

"It just shows you the grit and determination and the passion that people have for this community. That's why we're having it, to celebrate," he says.

Events at the cemetery start at 1:30pm Saturday afternoon. After that, people will move on to the Traynor homestead for a reception and the launch of a new book "Down the Irish Block Road."
