West Grey Will Have A Mayor's Race In October

The Municipality of West Grey will have two familiar faces running for mayor in this fall's municipal election.

Incumbent Kevin Eccles and Christine Robinson are the only people seeking the mayor's seat for the second consecutive election. Eccles won 59% of the vote in 2014.

Since the last vote, the issue of long-term care in West Grey has become a focal point, after Grey County council voted in favour of consolidating long-term care beds at Grey Gables in Markdale and Rockwood Terrace in Durham into what would be a newly-constructed facility in Durham. Cost estimates on the new build are close to $38 million.

Robinson says she "whole-heartedly supports Rockwood Terrace and Grey Gables, as well as any additional Grey County homes that may be built".

Eccles says he will use his campaign this summer to "try to get people to better understand the facts about why county council made that decision",  noting there has been "a lot of misinformation".

West Grey council will have at least three new members after current councillors Bev Cutting, Rob Thompson and Carol Lawrence all chose not to seek re-election.

This year's municipal election is on October 22.
