Plastic Straws Slowly Disappearing From Local Restaurants

More local restaurants are moving away from providing plastic straws with drinks.

Spencer Vail, the co-owner of Cait's Cafe in Goderich, says he and Caitlin made the decision after a trip to the west coast.

"We noticed that everyone there on the ocean side had stopped using plastic straws as a way to sort of reduce microplastics in the ocean, and we thought -- we're on the Great Lakes it's just as important that we get in the game as well," says Vail.

Vail says their customers seem to think it's a great idea and other restaurant owners in Goderich have called to ask where they can get paper or cardboard straws.

He says they did have to add a small surcharge on some of their bottled soft drinks to offset the cost of paper straws but that hasn't been a problem.

Cowbell Brewery in Blyth has also been using cardboard-type straws.
