New Beach House Open In Port Elgin

The "Beach House" at the Port Elgin beach is officially open.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith cut the ribbon to open the $640,000 renovation and expansion of the washroom facility at the foot of Green St.

The Beach House includes fully accessible expanded washrooms, family changing pods, outdoor showers and foot washing stations, as well as municipal office and storage space.

Smith points out it was a difficult process to see the project through, as council spent about a year debating the issue until an acceptable design and price tag was reached.

He says the project has come together nicely.

"It's a fabulous facility, I think it fulfills a couple of functions, first as a beach house and we built it so it's completely accessible and meets all accessibility standards," says Smith. "It's not all finished right now, but I think it's a great asset to the beach."

Smith says some exterior work including landscaping will be completed this fall when work begins to extend the beach promenade.

"We made a commitment about two years ago, a pretty substantial commitment in the budget to beach improvements, this is just one of them, the promenade is another," says Smith. "So it'll unfold as the next council gets some new priorities and new money to spend."

Smith is retiring from municipal politics after this fall's municipal election, but hopes the next council will continue to invest in the waterfront.
