Tender Award For New Police Services Building In Saugeen Shores

The new Saugeen Shores Police Service building remains on-budget as construction is set to begin.

Council awarded the construction tender to Allen-Hastings Limited of Owen Sound for up to $5.5-million, bringing the total cost of the project to $6.8-million once consulting and other fees are included, which is the exact amount originally budgeted.

Deputy Mayor Luke Charbonneau is chair of the police services board and says it's a relief to have the project ready to go.

"It's been a long time coming, we've known for a decade-and-a-half now that the current facility was inadequate and it was leading to some issues in terms of adequate and effective policing in the community," says Charbonneau. "That problem will be solved."

Charbonneau adds having the project come in exactly on-budget is a credit to the municipal staff who oversaw the planning stages.

"I think that's a testament to a process that was good from the start, put in place by the town's administration, I think they did an excellent job in getting through the process to a project we can actually approve and get constructed," says Charbonneau.

The new facility will be constructed on MacKenzie Dr. and Concession 10 at the north end of Port Elgin, just blocks from the current police station.

Charbonneau says work should get underway later this summer, with completion in late 2019 or early 2020.
