Air Service Study Proposed For Goderich

The Huron County Economic Development Department did not get the answer it was hoping for when a presentation was made to Goderich council on the future of the airport.

The proposal involved partnering with the town on an air service study.

Economic Development Officer Chris Watson says that would involve hiring someone external to see if there's a business case to bring an air service provider, like an airline, that would operate between the Goderich Airport and one of the airports in the GTA, likely Toronto Island or Pearson or even Hamilton.

Watson referred to a feasibility study that was completed last January and found an air service had the most potential for success.

The driver behind that was Bruce Power and the number of suppliers that are travelling back and forth between Huron-Bruce and the GTA for the Bruce site expansion.

Watson explains that if they establish an air service for three years that carries one thousand passengers a year and runs year-round, federal funding could cover 100% of capital costs like runway rehabilitation, aprons, taxi ways and terminal buildings.

Goderich council voted to refer it to their economic development board for further study.

Watson is hoping for a study to see if there is a reasonable business plan for moving forward.
