North Huron Council Must Act Soon On Howson Dam

The future of the Howson Dam in Wingham is unclear.

According to an assessment conducted by an engineering firm, the ability of the dam to maintain capacity is compromised and North Huron Council must act quickly.

Fuad Curi of KGS Group delivered the news to council this week and pointed out the high potential for hazard.

Curi says if the dam crumbles, a flood could send water rushing into parts of Wingham's downtown and lower town.

His report noted that some refurbishment options may not be possible, and replacement of the dam could cost between three and six million dollars.  According to Curi, demolition of the dam would cost around $500,000.

Council made a motion to send the report to the Save Howson Dam committee, the Ontario Rivers Alliance and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority.

They expect to make a decision on the future of the dam in the coming months.
