Changes To Smoke Free Ontario Act

Huron County Senior Public Health Promoter Angela Willert brought Goderich councillors up to date on changes to the Smoke Free Ontario Act.

One aspect of the act that not everyone is aware of is that it applies to certain specific areas of the beaches in Goderich, mainly the playground structures on the beach area, not the entirety of the beach.

"They do not decompose very well so that provides a risk for our waterways and for ingestion, we know a lot of kids frequent the beach, so that is something that we have worked with partners on and some local partners, such as the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation have taken a great lead in cleaning up our beaches," explains Willert.

The Smoke Free Ontario Act also covers areas such as municipal rec centres which is something new.

"We are seeing adds to the Smoke Free Ontario Act even as recent as this month has been re-launched to include additional areas. It now covers areas such as municipal rec centres, which is something new to the SFOA," says Willert.
