Lake Rosalind And Marl Lake Residents Get Backing For Water Testing

Residents of Lake Rosalind and Marl Lake have been given some financial backing from Brockton Council.

Monday night, council agreed to give $2,000 toward water sample testing that will be done by the residents, rather than government agencies.

Councillor Chris Peabody says the testing is in response to an issue with algae from last year.

"The lakes have had an ongoing blue-green algae problem, it pops up every three or four years. The last one which was two years ago resulted in a warning from the health unit, that people couldn't even use the water to pull into their houses and shower," he says.

Peabody says there were conflicting reports from different agencies testing the water, but a number of them were done in areas of the lake that weren't showing a true representation of the water quality. Now the residents on the lake can do the testing themselves in the right areas. Peabody says it's an efficient way to do it.

"The residents decided own their own to do their water testing so they could warn people on their own, have an advanced warning system and monitor it, gather data. It's a very cost-effective solution," says Peabody. "It doesn't involve any government agencies or salaries, it just involves the cost for the actual testing in the lab."
