Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance Promotes Organ Donations

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance held a DONORNation Conversation in Recognition of Be A Donor Month.

Dr. Tyler Rouse is the Hospital Donation Physician and explains they are hoping to encourage people to have the conversation with their families and go to the website beadonor.ca.

That way family members are aware of your wishes and you have the opportunity to give the gift of life.

Hospital Development Coordinator for Trillium Gift of Life Paula Schmidt adds it only takes two minutes to go to the website and register and then that information is in their database and available 24/7.

She says in the past, people signed donor cards, but that was always a problem when the time was crucial if they couldn't find a person's wallet or purse in an emergency.

Rena Spevack is a member of the HPHA board and is also an organ donor. She was a perfect match for her brother who needed a kidney in 1982. She says she had no second thoughts and it gave her brother another twenty good years that he would not have had without her kidney.

"It's just not something most people really think about day to day, so we're trying to raise awareness to get people to have those conversations with their families and go to beadonor.ca where you can sign up to become a donor, just to make sure that the people you love know what your wishes are and you have that opportunity to give the gift of life," says Rouse.
